Before the Summer 2016 season started, I compiled a list of the ten anime I was going to keep an eye out for. The list returns with the shows I’m keeping an eye out for in Winter 2017!
Seiren – School
Based around the same concept of Amagami SS, Seiren is based around Shōichi Kamita, a second-year high school student who is worried about university exams and his future. In this point in his life, he comes into contact with various girls, and the story follows Shōichi and his relationships with them
Aired on January 6th. Rating PG-13. 12 episodes.
Masamune-kun no Revenge – Harem, Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen
As a child, Masamune Makabe once suffered greatly at the hands of a wealthy and beautiful girl named Aki Adagaki, who nicknamed him “Piggy” due to his chubby appearance. Seeking revenge against his tormentor, Masamune works hard to improve himself and returns as an incredibly handsome, albeit narcissistic, high school student. When he encounters Aki once again, he is prepared to exact vengeance.
Aired on January 5th. Rating PG-13. Number of episodes unknown.
Demi-chan wa Kataritai – Comedy, Fantasy, School, Seinen
The story takes place in an age where “Ajin” (demi-human), more casually known as “Demi,” have slowly started to become accepted into human society. Tetsuo Takahashi is a biology teacher who ends up teaching three such Demi, hoping to understand more about them while also managing to catch their attention.

BanG Dream! – Music
Since she was very young, Kasumi Toyama has always been searching for the “Star Beat”, a sparkling and exciting sound she heard while looking up at the night sky. Just after getting into high school, Kasumi comes across a “star-shaped guitar” in the storage area of an old pawn shop. Feeling a rush and excitement she has never felt before, Kasumi teams up with four other girls and embarks on a journey to seek out the shiny place.

Gabriel DropOut – Comedy, Supernatural, School, Shounen
Chief Angel has come to Earth! However, she became so used to the life on Earth that she skips school and keeps playing online games, thus into self-destruction. It’s a school comedy that Gabriel turns into a lazy angel!
Airs January 9th. Rating PG-13. 12 episodes.
Idol Jihen – Music
Increasing income divide, creeping environmental pollution, unsolvable waste issues, childcare waiting lists being discussed without those concerned, repeated corruption… The government, smeared by vested interests, can’t do a thing against the many problems and sources of discontent. It’s in this situation, with Japan cornered with no way out, that idols rise up to save the day!
The Heroine Party, Sunlight Party, Starlight Party, Bishoujo Party, Wakaba Party, Subculture New Party, and SOS Party. From these seven idol political parties, the idols who have become National Diet members and representatives for each prefecture will smash through the sense of stagnation covering Japan using the power of song and dance! They’ll bring back the smiling faces of the people, and wrap Japan in a glittering aura!

Kuzu no Honkai – Drama, Romance, School, Seinen
Seventeen-year-old Mugi Awaya and Hanabi Yasuraoka appear to be the ideal couple. They are both pretty popular, and they seem to suit each other well. However, outsiders don’t know of the secret they share. Both Mugi and Hanabi have hopeless crushes on someone else, and they are only dating each other to soothe their loneliness. Mugi is in love with Akane Minagawa, a young teacher who used to be his home tutor. Hanabi is also in love with a teacher, a young man who has been a family friend since she was little. In each other, they find a place where they can grieve for the ones they cannot have, and they share physical intimacy driven by loneliness. Will things stay like this for them forever?

Spiritpact – Action, Shounen Ai, Supernatural
Heir of an old famous family of exorcist, Keika You is stricken by poverty after losing his parents. He struggles as a street fortune teller and computer recovery part timer to earn money. One night in a junkyard, he meets the mysterious yet charismatic exorcist, Ki Tanmoku, fighting an evil spirit. This encounter is the beginning of a fated story for Keika You. Unfortunately for him, he was actually hit by a car and became a ghost. That was when the handsome exorcist Ki appeared and asked Keika to make a “pact” with him to fight evil spirits together.

Kuroshitsuji Movie: Book of the Atlantic – Action, Comedy, Historical, Demons, Supernatural, Fantasy, Shonen
Whispers turn into screaming headlines in Earl Ciel Phantomhive’s morning paper as word of the dead being resurrected takes society by storm. But when the unsavoury details of the business reach Ciel’s ear, he and his superlative butler, Sebastian, book themselves on a luxury liner to look into these alleged miracles and the “Aurora Society” conducting them. As the waters lap and crash all around the vessel, mysterious individuals gather under the banner of the “Phoenix.” Ciel and Sebastian may be one step closer to the truth, but have they sealed their fates by conducting an investigation on what could easily become a floating coffin…?.

Kuroko no Basket: Last Game – Sports, School, Shonen
An American street basketball team called Jabberwock comes to Japan and plays a friendly match with a Japanese team, but after the Japanese team suffers a crushing defeat, the team members of Jabberwock start mocking Japanese basketball. Their comments enrage Riko’s father, and so he gathers a team made up of the five members of the Generation of Miracles plus Kuroko and Kagami, called Vorpal Swords, to have a revenge match against Jabberwock.
Airs March 18th. Rating PG-13. Duration unknown.
