The world of anime, if you’re just venturing out, is a big, scary looking mess of animation. There’s all these colourful looking cover arts and genres named in an – often – unfamiliar language.
Will this ever be a true weekly segment? I very much doubt it.
Regardless, this time I’m going to be giving you guys some anime recommendations from the Kids genre! Don’t be rolling your eyes, we’re all guilty of watching Pokémon or Digimon from time to time in order to reminisce. But, let’s ignore them for the time being and let’s focus on some of the lesser known children’s anime!
This week, I’m recommending a selection of anime of various lengths and tones, so it’s worth having a little check before you decide to just close this tab! For a cute movie, I’m recommending Doubutsu no Mori. For a more serious-toned show (‘serious’ as in ‘kiddy serious’) which gets a sweet ending, I’m recommending Chocolate Underground whereas if you want a more happy-go-lucky show, I think Tottoko Hamtarou would be perfect for you!
The sad thing is that I couldn’t find any legal platforms where you can stream these shows, however I will certainly update this post should this ever change! Alternatively, if you find a legal source of streaming, let me know and I’ll update the post!
So, what are these shows actually about?
Have you ever wanted a movie based off the video game franchise Animal Crossing? I have news for you – there is one! Doubutsu no Mori follows Ai as she moves to Animal Village. She meets new friends and seems to settle in quite well when one day she stumbles upon a message in a bottle whilst walking on the beach. This message in a bottle will send Ai on a quest in order to fulfil a Winter Eve miracle. Duration of the film: 1 hour and 27 mins
Chocolate Underground is set in a time where chocolate and other sweet treats have been banned thanks to the political reign of the Good For You party. These laws are strict and will be enforced by force if need be. The show follows two boys – Smudger and Huntley – who are determined to eat chocolate again, seeking out chocolate bootleggers and eventually establishing their own underground distribution. Approximate time to complete: 65 minutes
And finally, it’s time for the most known anime on this list – Tottoko Hamtaro. The show follows Hamtaro the hamster as he moves to a new house with his owner. There, he meets new hamsters and begins going on various different adventures around the entire city whilst their owners are away! The humans also have their own dramas going on and Hamtaro is able to help his owner more than once! Approximate time to complete (first season only): 123.3 hours
It’s definitely not a bad thing to enjoy a kids show every now and then! Don’t forget – Bananya was classed as a kids show and a lot of people watched and enjoyed that! Again, I’ll probably touch on this topic a little more in the future but go ahead and try something new!
Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever watched any of these shows. If not, what kids anime do you enjoy watching every now and again? Or are these shows just not for you? Regardless of your opinion, let’s discuss!
Until next time!

Can’t say that I have watched any of these animes, but I honestly am always open to watch pretty much everything. Whether it’s just for kids or not, as long as it’s entertaing enough I don’t mind watching it 😊
That’s the spirit to have! 😄
I love things for kids. So long as it has some semblance of a reality (I’ve come across a lot of really strange concepts in various mediums) and isn’t about teaching kids there abcs primarily, I’m up for it. I’d rather watch something primarily for kids then something i wouldn’t show to anyone whose under fifteen.
