Okay, so it’s about six months since I actually started this challenge. I started it at a bit of an unconventional time, but that hasn’t exactly stopped me from making some progress. Although, we may be pushing it for time, now.
Myself and some friends from university decided to participate in an anime challenge that followed the style of the challenges you find on MyAnimeList. Our Challenge Leader handpicked each criteria in order for us to experience a variety of different anime and to keep things interesting, which, honestly, he did a pretty good job of.
So far, I have completed 24 of the nearly 60 prompts of this challenge, so I’m almost halfway through. It’s taken me six months to get to practically the halfway point, which isn’t bad. Until you consider the fact that there’s only two months of 2018 left.
Help.
Am I going to still aim for the finish line? Absolutely. It might not be possible, but this girl is not giving up just yet. A lot of my recent reviews have been written because of this challenge as well. Reviews for shows like Wakaba*Girl, Baja no Studio and posts such as my advertising feature would not have been written had it not been for this challenge. It’s allowed me to think about different aspects of anime, different genres and it’s allowed me to explore shows I had never even heard of. So, really, if I don’t finish this challenge, at least I’ve gained something from it.
That being said, what shows do I still need to watch? A few of them are multiple-cour shows, which doesn’t exactly help my case, but that just means I’m going to have to somehow fit in some anime marathons here and there in the very near future. Here is the list of shows you may see me talking about very soon, in no particular order:
- K-On!
- Kuroko no Basket
- Rocket Girls
- Sailor Moon
- Tatami Galaxy
- Vampire Hunter D
- Quan Zhi Gai Shou
- Eve no Jikan
- Ray The Animation
- Space Cobra
- 18if
- Vatican Kiseki Chousakan
- Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens
- Shirobako
- Kuroshitsuji: Book of the Atlantic
- No Game No Life
- Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan
- xxxHOLiC
- The Royal Tutor
- Battle Spirits
- Mirai Shounen Conan
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Bubblegum Crisis
- Sailor Moon Crystal
- BanG Dream!
- Akatsuki no Yona
- Strawberry Panic
- Parasyte
- Wake Up, Girls!
There are certainly some different genres here as well as different decades, which, really, I find quite exciting. It’s time to see if I can really break out of my usual watching habits!
Have you seen any of these shows? Would you recommend them? Or are there some on here that you’d usually tell me to avoid? Can I really watch 29 shows of various different lengths in two months? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below!
Until next time!

Good luck with all of these: there are a lot of titles for animes that have been on my to watch list for ages as well 😊😊 Especially Full Metal Alchemist 😊😊
I love WUG-chan (Wake Up Girls!). It’s kind of a hard watch though, as it takes an unflinching look at some realities of the idol industry that the more usual bubblegum idol shows avoid. And the animation quality leaves a lot to be desired. But if you can get past that, it’s worth watching. Hint: The movie (Wake Up, Girls! – Seven Idols) is _not optional_ as it’s actually a double length (I.E. hour long) premiere episode rather than a standalone or sequel as most anime movies are.
As far as Shirobako goes, yes, watch it. The sooner the better.
Eve no Jikan… Oh, my, that’s a good choice. Keep a box of tissues handy during the final ep.
Sailor Moon Crystal… That’s a problematic one. (Not problematic themes, serious production and animation issues.) It’s widely regarded as not the best adaptation ever to be frank. If the anime for #41 doesn’t have to be related to one elsewhere in your list, I’d strongly recommend Space Battleship Yamato 2199, a reboot/reimagining of the classic 1970’s series. It’s a really, really strong SF action series. (It’s on Crunchy, but I don’t know your region.)
Book of the Atlantic is fun, although I think if you want to watch it legally your only choices are DVD/BD (at least in my region it’s on those formats, I don’t know if it’s the same for you) and the limited theatre run that occurred last year. You’ll enjoy it more if you read the manga arc beforehand, though.
My watching pace is erratic at best and slow as molasses at
(…shoot, hit Send too early.) Anyway, it’s slow as molasses at worst so I don’t think I can handle 50 shows in one year, but I’m doing 2 challenges as well. One I’ve seen 3/20 shows for (working on the 4th as I type this) and the other 3/10. However, the one with 10 has anime on my PTW while the one with 20 I’ve used a lot I’ve started already (since that was allowed), plus there’s some overlapping shows between the 2 challenges. There are no time limits on either though.
Also, Book of the Atlantic requires knowledge of previous arcs to understand who some characters are, so I’m pretty sure you need to see Book of Circus for that. (Book of Murder doesn’t introduce anyone of plot-affecting importance.)
Good luck finishing!
Sadly, due to my current region in the world, I can’t watch it legally in order to complete the challenge. However, I do plan on buying the DVD/BD as soon as I can once I’m back in my home country. It’ll go nicely with my collection of the other Black Butler DVDs and Blu-Rays! (Although I wasn’t able to find until me moving countries, so hopefully I’ll be able to find it when I return!) Sadly, we never got the theatre screenings in the UK, so I couldn’t see it then either. :c And I’m completely up to date with the manga, so that’s not a problem for me. ;3
My pace at watching shows is absolutely terrible, but hopefully I’ll be able to at least get a few more of these done before the end of the year!
Hope your challenges go well for you!
